Fish feeders is a term which is used to describe cheap fish which is used to feed animals such as turtles or other larger fish. Fish feeders may also be used as live food for sharks. Fish feeders have a number of important characteristics. First, they tend to be simple for fishkeepers to hold and breed, and these species also tend to be receptive to overcrowding. One good example of fish feeders is guppies. Because these fish can be breeded and stored in large groups, they make excellent fish feeders. They can also be sold at a much lower price.

In most cases, fish feeders will be fed to fish which are large and predatory, such as catfish for example. However, turtles that live in freshwater also feed on smaller fish, and they will generally be fed these fish since they will readily accept them. Many proponents of fish feeders feel that they are highly nutritious, and they are the same animals that their pets would feed on in a natural environment. Many pet keepers also like fish feeders because it gives them a chance to watch predators in action. While fish feeders have a lot of advantages, they also have some disadvantages as well

Fish Feeder Disadvantages

Some aquarist see the use of fish feeders as being cruel, as it is not needed given the alternatives. These people will often argue that when the fish feeders are placed in the tank with a much larger predator, they have no real chance of survival, unlike in the wild, where they are capable of escaping. Because the feeder fish have no chance of escape, since they are in an unnatural environment, placing them in this predicament is unnatural. Many of those who are against the use of feeder fish claim that the owners use them due to choice, as opposed to not having a choice.

It should also be noted that many species of feeder fish, such as goldfish for example, are rich in Vitamin B1, and when they're consumed in large amounts, they could cause a diet imbalance in the body. Since feeder fish are often raised in environments which are heavily crowded, they tend to host a number of different parasites, and this bacteria can be transferred to any fish which digests them. Another disadvantage of using feeder fish is that they don't mimic the fish that live in a more natural environment. Those who are against fish feeders believe that the only fish which can be used for food are those which are raised at home, and which are livebearers.

There are a number of species which will typically be used as fish feeders. In addition to goldfish or guppies, Siamese fighting fish may be used, particular those which are females. Tilapias may also be used, and Bluegill are favored as well. While fish feeders are used heavily in the United States, they are not as popular in Great Britain. One reason for this is because aquarists in the UK prefer to avoid fish feeders due to the the numerous health problems which may become prevalent.
